The Indian VLT® sales company together with the High Power Competence center in USA developed and provided 12-pulse filters for six LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) transfer pumps and six 6-pulse filters for Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) - one of the nine top performers in the Public Sector in India, with extensive interests in crude oil refining and manufacture of petroleum products.
Customer background :
In December 2009, Danfoss India received an enquiry for the supply of six 12-pulse, 132 kW drives for the LPG transfer pumps, and three 6-pulse, 0.37 kW drives for Mercaptan Dosing pumps from UHDE India Private Limited (UIPL), one of the leading consultants in the Petrochemical Industry worldwide and a part of the Thyssen Krupp Group. .
Application details :
The scope also included six 12-pulse Input Converter transformers for the 132 kW drives. These drives were to be installed at BPCL’s new LPG storage facility at Uran, near Mumbai.
It was decided to offer a locally developed 12-pulse drive solution to overcome the difficulty, that VLT® 12-pulse filters were available from 250 kW upwards only in the 380-500 V range.
Sound application know how :
Danfoss India’s track record of sound application know-how and working on large projects like the one being executed for NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation), Jhajhar with 400-500 kW 12-pulse filters, coupled with a competent service network, secured the order for Danfoss.Competitors fell behind in the race to the finish line.
Considerable challenges :
Several stages of the project presented considerable challenges for the engineering team in Chennai.
- Generation of engineering drawings.
- Quality Approval Plan (QAP).
- Interactions with the consultant for getting these approved Procurement of raw material (including transformers).
- Assembly of panels, testing the drives and the newly developed 12-pulse solution.
The drive panels were successfully type tested in UIPL’s presence in the last week of September 2010 and dispatched to site in the 3rd week of October.
Local transformers :
The converter grade 12-pulse filter transformers have been locally sourced from Indcoil Transformers, a reputed manufacturer located near Mumbai.
German rectifier stacks :
The 12-pulse rectifier stacks have been sourced from Semikron Rectifiers India Limited, a subsidiary of Semikron Germany.
Protected against over current :
The design uses two 200 A diode rectifier stacks. Each stack is fully protected against over-current through line semiconductor fuses, and over-temperature through a heat sink mounted sensor.
Soft charging the DC capacitor bank :
The drive input rectifier plays the role of soft charging the DC capacitor bank of the drive during power on and is subsequently disabled.
Fool proof :
The control logic ensures that the transition from drive rectifier to the external rectifier is foolproof and free from malfunctions.
